Utility Inventory & Operations Technician

The Town of Stowe Electric Department (SED) has been providing the community of Stowe with reliable electric service since 1911. SED takes pride in providing outstanding customer service to our 4,450 Residential and Commercial customers. We are seeking a qualified Utility Inventory and Operations Technician with inventory, mapping, Office 365, and electric utility experience to join our team.


General Summary of The Position:
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Operations, this position is responsible for the organization and management of supplies and materials within inventory for Stowe Electric Department utility operations. Receives and disperses operational messages between field personnel and internal departments and initiates and processes work order requests. Monitors the utility GIS system to update locations within a reasonable timeframe. Completes Dig Safe requests to locate utility infrastructure in a timely manner.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Maintain work orders, inventory records, and equipment databases within the utility enterprise software system and verify their accuracy.

  • Examine, interpret, and interact with computer mapping, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and associated databases.

  • Conduct monthly, quarterly and/or annual inventory counts.

  • Work with department supervisors to determine and maintain inventory area and shop needs.

  • Establish and maintain consistent stocking and inventory procedures. Stock shelves and supplies in the yard as required.

  • Coordinate shipping and delivery of materials with Administrative Assistant, Director of Operations, and Vendors as directed.

  • Operate large equipment to unload and/or organize inventory.

  • Examine shipment verify accuracy and to check for any visible damages or shortages.

  • Process paperwork such as material received, packing slips, etc. and submit to accounting using utility enterprise software system.

  • Monitor DigSafe locate requests and relay information as needed.

  • Locate underground utilities for GIS/OMS and DigSafe requests and enter necessary data into utility enterprise software system.

  • Conduct monthly manual reads for approximately 20 non-AMI electric meters.

  • Perform duties in a manner consistent with safe practices.

  • Perform other duties as assigned, including facility maintenance, and flagging details as needed.

 

Qualifications and Basic Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. and one year’s experience in inventory management, utility dispatch or customer service, or work related to utility distribution systems; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Ability to plan and organize complex work, review, and analyze data.

  • Must possess or have the ability to become proficient in Microsoft Office or similar software programs along with utility-specific inventory management including GIS software applications.

  • Must possess significant organizational skills.

  • Ability to organize and maintain accurate records.

  • Must possess mechanical aptitude and ability.

  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Must possess the knowledge or have the ability to learn how to operate large equipment.

  • Knowledge of general office practices, procedures, and office equipment.

This is a non-exempt IBEW Local 300 bargaining position. We offer an outstanding benefits package which includes: health, dental, vision, 401(a), holidays and training opportunities. Additionally, there are generous Paid-Time-Off benefits. New employees will receive a minimum of 6 weeks Paid-Time Off after only 1 year.

WAGES: Journeyperson, $22 - $27/hour

Tree Trimming Crew Journeyperson

The Town of Stowe Electric Department (SED) has been providing the community of Stowe with reliable electric service since 1911. SED takes pride in providing outstanding customer service to our 4,450 Residential and Commercial customers. We are seeking a qualified Journeyperson with tree trimming/vegetation management experience to join our team.


General Summary of The Position:
SED Tree Trimmers work as part of a crew and are responsible for ensuring the safe removal of trees and brush near and around high voltage power lines and to maintain SED’s ROWs. These responsibilities are vital to our ability to provide safe and reliable electricity in an efficient manner. SED Tree Trimmers perform varied and responsible duties requiring a thorough knowledge of safety practices and must be able to exercise judgement and initiative in completing tasks.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Availability to assist during storm restoration which may occur outside of regular business hours.

  • Proper care and maintenance of all SED equipment including vehicles, chainsaws, chippers, tools, ropes and safety equipment.

  • Assuring that the trimmed areas are left in an orderly and clean state.

  • Uses ropes, pruning poles, files and other tools and equipment in pruning activities.

  • Performs the trimming and/or removal of trees, limbs, and brush growing in or near power lines. This includes working on customer’s property and within the ROW.

  • Ambassador of safety to themselves and others by displaying outstanding safety practices and participating in on-going safety and other related training.

  • Other assigned duties may include flagging, shoveling, garage maintenance.

  • Travel to other utilities outside of the SED territory will be required.

  • Working around and being able to identify energized conductors.

  • Assesses pruning requirements of trees and easements; decayed or insect infested trees and makes recommendations on whether trees should be removed.

  • Representation of superior customer service when interacting with customers in the field.

  • Learns and demonstrates an understanding of the regulations governing all aspects of the Utility Arboricultural/Line Clearance industry.

Qualifications and Basic Requirements:

  • Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, have high school diploma or GED.

  • Familiar with the types and purposes of proper pruning and tree removal techniques and the tools and equipment required.

  • Ability to complete CPR/AED certification.

  • Must possess a current Vermont CDL class A or B

  • Must have thorough knowledge and experience in roping and climbing trees.

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, customers, and other personnel.

This is a non-exempt IBEW Local 300 bargaining position. SED provides managed clothing programs, boot and winter clothing allowances and more. First or Second Class Lineworker

The Town of Stowe Electric Department (SED) is seeking a Certified 1st Class or 2nd Class Lineworker to join our team of highly skilled professionals. SED has been providing the community of Stowe with reliable electric service since 1911. SED takes pride in providing outstanding customer service to our 4,450 Residential and Commercial customers.


General Summary of Position:
SED Lineworkers
 work as part of a crew and are responsible for ensuring SED customers receive safe and reliable electricity in an efficient manner. SED Lineworkers perform varied and responsible duties requiring a thorough knowledge of safety practices and must be able to exercise judgement and initiative in completing tasks. Work includes working on de-energized and energized lines utilizing rubber glove practices in all scenarios.

General Summary of Essential Job Functions:

  • Installation and maintenance of underground and overhead distribution system.

  • Working energized conductors (primary and secondary)

  • Setting, framing and guying poles

  • Respond to emergency/regular repair/maintenance of overhead and underground distribution lines

  • Conduct switching and tagging operations on VELCO electrical systems

  • Stringing and Sagging Conductors

  • Mounting Equipment, setting transformers

  • Transformer Connections, grounding equipment

  • Tree Trimming

  • Street Lighting

  • Locating underground lines for Dig Safe

  • Trouble shooting problems

  • Working with safety and VOSHA requirements

  • Maintaining training and safety skills through scheduled classes

  • Any other duties assigned by Management

  • Safely operate and maintain the SED operations fleet such as digger derricks, bucket trucks and excavators used in the maintenance and repair of overhead and underground electrical lines.

  • Climbing poles

  • Installation and removal of banners

  • Participation in a rotating on-call schedule

  • Respond to requests, comments and/or complaints from customers in a professional manner

  • Cleaning and stocking line trucks

  • Routine maintenance and cleaning of the garage/sub-stations and other yards

  • The above duties represent those of a 1st class journeyman, 2nd class applicants will maintain duties as allowed by their classification.

​​Qualifications and Basic Requirements:

  • Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, have high school diploma or GED and a minimum of 2 years of experience.

  • 1st Class Lineworker certification preferred, 2nd Class welcome.

  • Proficient in safe rubber gloving techniques

  • Knowledge of electric utility construction standards, National Electric Safety Code, and VOSHA/OSHA standards.

  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain one within 60 days of employment.

  • Ability to be available for on-call schedules and emergency call outs.

  • Must live within a 30-minute radius of the Town of Stowe or be able to re-locate within 6 months

This is a non-exempt Union position. Stowe Electric Department currently offers competitive wages with the opportunity for over-time and on-call pay. In addition, we offer an outstanding benefits package which includes: health, dental, vision, 401(a), holidays and training opportunities. Additionally, there are generous Paid-Time-Off benefits. New employees will receive a minimum of 6 weeks Paid-Time Off after only 1 year.​


WAGES: $49.28/hour 1st Class - $40.90/hour 2nd Class. Plus, the SED benefit package adds up to an additional 62% to the annual compensation.
